I indicated in the last post that I would talk about CJ's parent teacher interview later. I wasn't sure how I felt about the parent teacher interview and I'm still not quite sure how I feel. I have to say the interview wasn't horrible, however, it wasn't all glowing either.
CJ is apparently a little behind in his printing, but on a good note he has improved quite a bit since September, so there is progress. If I had known there was issues with his printing, etc. I would've had him working on the stuff at home. It's been over half a school year and this is the first I'm aware that he is behind. We have begun to make him do more printing, etc. at home to try and get him to be on par to where he's expected.
He is taking French Immersion and he seems to understand the French commands, he will speak French to her if she models this to him first. My comment to that is this is his first exposure to French. He doesn't hear French at home, so my thought is of course he's not going to automatically reply in French, it's not his natural language. I do not speak French but from all the meetings, etc. that we had been to before we signed him up for French Immersion, we were reassured that we didn't need to be able to speak French in order for kids to do well.
I asked the teacher if she felt I made the right decision in putting CJ in French Immersion. Her response was maybe. She didn't have any red flags in that this wasn't a right fit but she did have some hesitation as to whether or not this was completely the right decision.
On a completely positive note, she did say that CJ is very cooperative etc. in school. And that any issues he has with hands on etc. are more a result of not knowing how to appropriately play with his friends (or getting caught up in the game of tag and accidentally choking his friend) then it is behaviour/aggressiveness.
Because of his prenatal start and that fact that he is one of the youngest in his class I worry about him a lot at school. I just want to know that we've made the right decision for him. I do not want to put any undue pressure on him because I've enrolled him in French Immersion.
Also on another positive note, he does really enjoy school!
